NYC-Based Dance Company Soul Steps Visits Laco through arts LaB grant

Soul Steps, a New York City-based dance company dedicated to the African-American tradition of stepping, recently visited Lacordaire, offering students an immersive experience into this vibrant art form.

During their visit, the dancers showcased high-energy step choreography, blending percussive movements, hip-hop rhythms, and call-and-response elements. Students not only witnessed dynamic performances but also learned the history and techniques of stepping, including a demonstration of gumboot, which began in the mines of South Africa.

The Soul Steps performance was made possible through a grant that Lacordaire received to support arts education programming during the 2024-2025 school year. The school secured this funding by submitting an Arts Lab application through Young Audiences of New Jersey, ensuring students have access to enriching cultural experiences.

Soul Steps’ visit to Lacordaire provided students with a hands-on opportunity to explore cultural storytelling through the powerful language of rhythm.
